Bird Care

Encouraging birds to your garden
Whilst it is undeniably better for birds and other wildlife to obtain their food naturally, we are unfortunately living in depleted habitats. This is a result of many factors, including the desire for tidy gardens, the upsurge of paving & concrete and the use of artificial chemicals. Our gardens generally no longer provide adequate food or shelter for our garden birds, particularly in winter and during our more extreme weather patterns.
Favourite bird foods:
For this reason, we do stock a large variety of bird food and feeders [including some squirrel proof cages] from our suppliers at Peckish. The higher fatty foods, such as peanuts and suet balls are recommended in colder weather to provide warmth and energy, whilst whole peanuts should not be offered during the breeding season, as they can choke fledglings.
We also advise that feeders be regularly cleaned with hot soapy water to stop diseases spreading and to never leave mouldy food out, as this is dangerous for birds.
Favourite native plants to feed birds:
Whilst feeding the birds undoubtedly provides us with hours of enjoyment and there are arguably benefits to certain species of birds, we would encourage our customers to incorporate beneficial plants, particularly native varieties that provide natural food for birds.
These can have winter berries such as Hawthorn, Sea buckthorn, Viburnum, (all on sale at Brownes). We also stock a huge range of both exotic and native perennials which attract pollinators by providing food for both adults and their larvae. These in turn supply food for birds and other creatures.
By planting up a garden which offers both shelter and seasonal food for birds, they will return the favour by providing a choral ensemble and offering free pest control.
